Family Therapy
How does Family Therapy Work?
We all experience situations differently and expect others to feel the same way as we do. Family dynamics can sometimes be overwhelming for each separate member as they may feel unseen or unheard. By enabling the whole family to explore their individual needs, problems and emotions in a safe and understanding environment, the family can address how a situation or issue is affecting the individual or family as a whole and in doing so their quality of family life in general. We all have some negative thoughts and may easily become overpowered by the strength Of such feelings, which can be highlighted when they are not addressed. Family therapy is sharing such thoughts and beliefs in a safe setting, enabling us to understand how this has a negative impact on everyday life, at work or home, and how this affects our relationships with others. Once this is recognised and acknowledged there is room to move forward in a positive way. The family therapist will not give you the answer, this is for the family to explore and find - we all have the answers – sometimes we just don’t know how to get in touch with them. A family therapist will facilitate a safe environment where difficult beliefs and sometimes complicated issues can be spoken without judgment. Provide an arena for growth and understanding in a neutral and therapeutic space where change can happen.
Who will I see?
You will see an experienced Family therapist who has been trained to work with families and children in varying degrees of distress. There will be an initial assessment session where all possibilities can be explored. Where questions can be answered and fears put to rest. If everyone agrees that therapy is the way forward the family and therapist will arrange to meet for further sessions. Families are unique and so the amount of sessions will depend on the issues to be addressed. Sometimes during the counselling sessions the therapist may identify that a member of the family would benefit from individual counselling sessions and they will help that person find a suitable therapist.
Some issues to consider are as follows, relationship issues, bereavement, loss, special needs, ADHD, Life limiting illness and change of job, school, and moving house can all create discomfort within a family unit.
